FEATURED DIVE OPERATOR OF THE WEEK : AMORAY DIVING

We got chatting to Colin Odgen over at Amoray Diving in Sodwana. He explained his passion for diving that lead to him away from a corporate life and allowed him to start his own operation on the sandy beaches in Kwazulu- Natal.

Q. Hi Colin, how are you? Do you have time for a few questions about you and your diving operation in Sodwana?
A.  I would love to, but could you phone me back in an hour, I just got out of the water and I need to wash the boats.
   1 HOUR LATER
Q. So Colin, how did you get into the diving game?
A. Well, I have always been a keen scuba diver and would dive as often as I could. I got a bit tired of the corporate so eight years ago I decided to start up my own diving operation in Sodwana and I haven’t looked back since.

Q. How many dives have you had since?
A. Wow, I stopped counting along time ago but I would say in the vicinity of 4000 to 5000 dives.

Q. And where have you dived?
A. Wow, I have dived all over, obviously most of my diving in the last 8 years has been over here in Sodwana but other than that my first dive was at Aliwal Shoal and since then I’ve been to Maldives, Mozambique, Madagascar, India and Bahamas.

Q. Would you recommend a career in the diving industry?
A. Look, the diving life is very nice from the outside but when you are here it’s not as glamorous as it seems. It’s hard work. Boats need to cleaned, licenses registered and it’s not going to make you a lot of money. An appropriate saying that is fitting for the dive industry is “one way to make a small fortune is to start with a big fortune”.

Q. Do you have any interesting dive trips planned?
A. As a company we don’t really arrange dive trips but on a personal note I spend all my time at the ocean so when the opportunity for a trip presents itself I go as far away from the ocean as possible, usually the desert.

Q. You must be looking forward to the Easter weekend?
A. I am, we are expecting a big influx of local and international guests alike and it’s always nice when things are busy around here.

Q. Lastly, do you have a message for our readers?
A. Absolutely. I have been in Sodwana for a number of years already and I have heard tourists from all over the world saying that this is one of the best dive sites they have ever been to and I would like to urge South African divers to come over here and make use of this beautiful place we have; I mean just this morning I was out diving and I had a run in with a huge Manta. So get down here and discover this beautiful ocean of ours.
